Facial Sculpting with 3D Accuscan® Patient-specific Implants

An observation by Jeff Klinger, Sales Representative

Wow! I recently had the opportunity to sit in on a 3D Accuscan interactive web meeting. It was amazing, and I’m sure the resulting product will make a huge difference in someone’s life.

Implantech partners with 3D Systems Inc., Littleton, CO, utililizing the services of their Biomedical Design team. Throughout the web meeting we assist the surgeon in designing the precise, patient-specific facial implant from CT scan data. So whether your patients have been living with disfigurement or facial trauma—or they need a non-stock solution for cosmetic reasons—3D Accuscan is your go-to tool for delivering a great outcome.

How it works:

  • Upload your patient’s CT scan directly to 3D Systems
  • Join your virtual sculpting session with the expert designer
  • Review the PDF Planning Pictures at which time the surgeon can approve the design or ask for another web meeting
  • Receive your patient-specific silicone implant and schedule the surgery.

In the case that I watched, the left side of the patient’s mandible was significantly different than the right side. It was great — in a matter of seconds, Mike the 3D design technician, had created a mirror image of the healthy right side and laid it over the left side. With a few adjustments directed by the surgeon, Mike had designed an implant that achieved perfect left/right symmetry.

A disfigurement that had afflicted this patient for decades had just been resolved
…a new lease on life!

When I first heard of 3D Accuscan, I thought it would entail a substantial software learning curve. But that’s not at all the case. Quick and knowledgeable of facial anatomy, the design technician takes care of all the technology for you. It’s a really simple and enjoyable exercise, and we were done in about 30 minutes.

I see a huge opportunity for 3D Accuscan to correct disfigurement and traumatic injuries suffered by children and adults, a procedure often covered by insurance. Another great opportunity is the cosmetic patient seeking a look that’s unattainable with off-the shelf facial implants, and willing to seek out the surgeon who can deliver customization.
